Honoring Lakeside's western roots and racing legends

Few San Diego communities wear their heritage as proudly as Lakeside, a town of western roots and racing legends alike. Since the first rodeo near Lindo Lake in 1920, families have ranched, ridden, and gathered each spring for the Lakeside Rodeo and Western Days Parade. Those same rodeo grounds are where the community comes together to honor its own: the Celebration of Life for hometown racing champion Ron Esau (the 1986 NASCAR Southwest Tour title-holder, born and raised in Lakeside) was held there. When a loved one's life was shaped by this close-knit community, a heartfelt tribute can reflect it.

Scattering ashes near Lakeside: what the law allows

Families often ask about scattering at a meaningful local spot, but California's Health and Safety Code prohibits scattering cremated remains in lakes, streams, and reservoirs, which means Lake Jennings and El Capitan Reservoir, both protected drinking-water reservoirs, are not legal scattering sites. California does permit scattering on private land with the owner's written consent, in dedicated scattering gardens, and at sea at least 500 yards offshore. We help your family choose an option that is both meaningful and fully compliant.

Common Questions

Lakeside Cremation FAQs

Do you serve families in Lakeside and East County?
Yes. Bravo Family Mortuary is at 4427 Rainier Ave in the Del Cerro area of San Diego, about 12 miles southwest of Lakeside via Interstate 8. We regularly serve families throughout Lakeside, including Eucalyptus Hills, Winter Gardens, and the Lake Jennings area, and we can travel to you to make arrangements.
Can we scatter our loved one's ashes at Lake Jennings or El Capitan Reservoir?
No. Under California law, scattering cremated remains in lakes and reservoirs is prohibited, and both Lake Jennings and El Capitan Reservoir are protected drinking-water reservoirs. Legal alternatives include scattering on private land with written permission, in a dedicated scattering garden, or at sea. We're happy to walk your family through compliant choices.
Where can Lakeside veterans be buried or inurned?
Eligible veterans and their dependents can be interred at Miramar National Cemetery off Nobel Drive in San Diego, the active national cemetery for the county. It offers casket gravesites, in-ground cremation sites, and columbarium niches at no cost for the gravesite. We help coordinate burial honors and the required eligibility paperwork.

Bravo Family Mortuary offers the same transparent pricing to every community we serve, including Lakeside: simple cremation starts at $1,695, with no hidden fees. That price covers professional services, transfer into our care, refrigeration, all legal documents and permits, the cremation process and crematory fee, and a temporary urn.
What is included in a simple cremation?
Our simple cremation includes the professional services of our funeral director and staff, transfer of your loved one into our care, refrigeration for up to 14 days, all legal documentation and permits, the cremation process and crematory fee, a standard container, and a temporary urn with the return of cremated remains.
How long does the cremation process take?
The cremation itself typically takes two to three hours. After all authorizations and permits are obtained, we generally complete the process and return cremated remains to the family within five to seven business days.
