A Gentle Guide

Choosing a Burial, With Care

Losing someone you love is one of the hardest experiences any of us will face. If you are arranging a burial in San Diego, whether after a sudden loss or a long goodbye, please know that you do not have to carry this alone. For many families, burial offers something profoundly comforting: a permanent, peaceful place to return to, to sit with memories, and to feel close to the one they've lost. At Bravo Family Mortuary, our role is to handle the difficult details with dignity so you can be present for what matters.

Finding the right kind of burial

Not every burial looks the same, and that is a good thing: the right choice is the one that reflects your loved one and your family's wishes. A traditional burial includes a viewing and a chapel or graveside service, giving everyone a chance to gather and say goodbye together. An immediate burial is a simpler, more private option for families who prefer to grieve quietly or hold a separate memorial later. And a natural, or green, burial returns your loved one gently to the earth using biodegradable materials, with no embalming chemicals or concrete vault, a meaningful choice for the environmentally conscious. We'll explain each path honestly and never steer you toward the most expensive option.

We coordinate the cemetery, so you don't have to

One of the most overwhelming parts of arranging a burial is dealing with the cemetery on top of everything else. Bravo Family Mortuary works with every cemetery in San Diego County, including Fort Rosecrans and Miramar National Cemeteries for veterans, El Camino Memorial Park, Greenwood Memorial Park, and Glen Abbey, and we handle the transportation, scheduling, permits, and graveside logistics on your behalf. For veterans, we coordinate military honors and burial benefits directly with the VA at no added stress to your family.

Transparent pricing you can trust

A burial is an investment in remembrance, and you deserve to understand every cost before you commit to anything. Our burial pricing in San Diego is clear and upfront, starting at $2,995 for immediate burial. Under the FTC Funeral Rule, you are always free to provide your own casket, and we will never charge you a fee for doing so. As a family-owned funeral home, we treat every family the way we would want our own to be treated, with honesty, patience, and respect.

Common Questions

Burial Services FAQ

How much does a burial cost in San Diego?
Burial costs in San Diego vary depending on the type of service. At Bravo Family Mortuary, immediate burial starts at $2,995 (casket provided by family), traditional burial with full service starts at $6,499, and natural burial starts at $3,995. Cemetery fees, caskets, and additional merchandise are separate.
What is included in a traditional burial service?
A traditional burial service at Bravo Family Mortuary includes professional funeral director services, transfer of your loved one, embalming and personal care, dressing and cosmetic preparation, a 4-hour visitation and reception, funeral service in our chapel, and hearse transportation with flower delivery to the cemetery.
Do I need to buy a casket from the funeral home?
No. Under the FTC Funeral Rule, you have the right to purchase a casket from any vendor and we cannot charge a handling fee for using it. We offer caskets ranging from $1,295 to $52,395, but you are welcome to provide your own.
What is the difference between burial and cremation?
Burial involves placing the body in a casket and interring it in a cemetery plot or mausoleum. Cremation reduces the body to ashes through high heat, and the remains can be kept in an urn, scattered, or buried. Both options allow for a full funeral service beforehand.
Can burial services be personalized?
Absolutely. Every burial service at Bravo Family Mortuary can be fully personalized with custom floral arrangements, music, video tributes, cultural or religious ceremonies, memory books, and reception catering. We work closely with each family to create a meaningful tribute.
What is a green burial?
A green burial uses biodegradable materials and avoids embalming chemicals, metal caskets, and concrete vaults. The body is placed in a natural shroud or biodegradable casket and buried in a designated green cemetery, allowing a natural return to the earth with minimal environmental impact.
How long after death can a burial take place?
In California, there is no law requiring burial within a specific timeframe. With refrigeration, burial can typically take place within 7 to 14 days. If embalming is chosen, the timeline can extend further. We provide refrigeration for up to 14 days as part of our packages.
What cemeteries does Bravo Family Mortuary work with in San Diego?
We coordinate with all San Diego County cemeteries including Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, Miramar National Cemetery, El Camino Memorial Park, Greenwood Memorial Park, Glen Abbey Memorial Park, and many others. We handle all cemetery logistics on your behalf.
Is embalming required for burial?
Embalming is not legally required in California. However, it is recommended if you plan to hold a public viewing or visitation, or if burial will be delayed beyond a few days. Refrigeration is an alternative to embalming for preserving the body prior to burial.
Can I have a graveside-only service?
Yes. A graveside-only service takes place entirely at the cemetery and can include readings, prayers, music, and eulogies. It is a simple yet meaningful option that many families choose as an alternative to a full chapel service.
Is burial more expensive than cremation in San Diego?
Generally, yes. Burial involves additional costs that cremation does not, most notably a casket, a cemetery plot, and often a burial vault and headstone. At Bravo Family Mortuary, immediate burial starts at $2,995 and traditional burial at $6,499, while simple cremation starts at $1,695. That said, many families feel a traditional burial offers a permanent place to visit and grieve, which is deeply meaningful. We will walk you through the full cost of each option, including cemetery fees, so there are no surprises.
What is a burial vault and do I need one?
A burial vault is a lined outer container that holds the casket and prevents the ground above the grave from settling over time. California law does not require a vault, but nearly all cemeteries require either a vault or a grave liner as a condition of burial to keep their grounds level and well-maintained. Green burial cemeteries are the exception and do not use vaults. Bravo Family Mortuary will confirm the specific requirements of your chosen cemetery and include them transparently in your arrangements.
Can veterans be buried at no cost in San Diego?
Yes. Eligible veterans can be buried at no cost in a national cemetery such as Fort Rosecrans or Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego, which includes the grave, opening and closing, a government headstone or marker, a burial flag, and perpetual care. The veteran's spouse may also be eligible. Bravo Family Mortuary coordinates directly with the VA and the national cemeteries to arrange military honors and handle the paperwork, so your family can focus on remembrance.
What should I bring when arranging a burial?
If possible, bring the deceased's full legal name, date and place of birth, Social Security number, and the names of parents and spouse for the death certificate. Veterans should bring discharge papers (DD-214) if available. It also helps to bring any clothing you would like your loved one dressed in, recent photographs for cosmetic care, and details of any cemetery plot already owned. If you don't have everything on hand, that's completely fine. Our San Diego team will help you gather what's needed at a pace that feels manageable.
