Robert Thompson passed away at the age of 92 in San Diego, the city he settled in 63 years ago. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Robert grew up in Stanton, Iowa with his beloved parents William and Grace, and his loving older brothers, William Jr. and Elroy.
Bob is survived by his stepdaughter Linda D. Doherty, her children Danica Arnold and Shane Doherty, and great grandchildren Lily and Leo Arnold, and Finn Doherty, and his stepson Charles D. Carullo, his children, Gina Burns, Kimberly Higgins, Cindy Rosser, and Charles Carullo Jr, and great grandchildren Lucas and Dylan Burns, William and Phoebe Higgins.
Robert spent his childhood in small town, Stanton Iowa graduating from Stanton High School in 1949. He enlisted in the United States Air Force where he was honored for his record setting Morse code skills during the Korean War. After his service he worked on the railroad, and migrated to the Grand Canyon. He met his wife Sara, now deceased, and her daughter Linda in Florida where they married and moved to San Diego. Bob worked for the Union Tribune newspaper, founded Thompson Type, typesetting for national publications, and later opened Horton Toy and Doll store in Horton Plaza before retiring.
Bob will be missed but never forgotten for his love of his wife, family and the natural wonders of Yosemite and the Grand Canyon.
Memorial service with immediate family to be held at Miramar National Cemetery November 18, 2024 where he will be buried with is beloved wife Sara.
