James Edmund McSweeney

James “Jimmy” McSweeney was born June 19th 1955 in Miami, Florida and passed away peacefully and unexpectedly in the early morning hours of Saturday, May 2nd, 2026 at the age of 70. He was a graduate of The University of Miami 1977 and was part of the second graduating class of St. George’s Medical School located in Grenada, West Indies.
He went on to marry his high school sweetheart, Vivia McSweeney post-graduation and together they traveled to Brooklyn, New York City where he pursued his training in orthopedic surgery. Following completion of training, Dr. McSweeney established his practice in San Diego, CA in 1981, where he and his wife Vivia raised their four children in Coronado. Dr. McSweeney was known throughout the medical community as a reliable and hard working orthopedic surgeon having practiced 40+years. He was famous for his fishing and scuba diving expeditions to San Clemente & Catalina Islands as well as Mexico, on his boat the “Mama Dog II”. Dr. McSweeney loved the ocean, and building his practice while raising his family near the Pacific coast was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.
Dr. James McSweeney will be greatly missed by his wife Vivia of 45 years, their 4 children: Lauren, Kirsten, James III, and Savannah, and her fiancé Brandon Dubinski, his sister Mary-Lou Wilson and her husband Mike Wilson of Reno, Nevada. Dr. McSweeney is also survived by his wife’s two sisters, Patricia and Caroline, brother-in-laws, William and Gary, respectively. Patricia and William’s daughter Hannah and Gary and Caroline’s children Vivia, Gary, and Caroline.
