Elisa Luna Sanchez

Dearest family and friends, with great sadness we announce that our beloved mother, Elisa Sánchez, passed away on Sunday, July 14, 2024.

She was our source of inspiration, optimism, and unconditional love throughout her long life. She is preceded in death by her beloved parents, Juan and Josefina Luna, her brother Roberto (Bob) Luna, and her husband Luis Asunción Sánchez. She is survived by her children, Sandra and Marcos, her grandchildren Rachel, Victoria and David, her great granddaughter McKinley, and the many members of the Rodriguez-Cardenas family in Mexico and in the United States.

She is remembered with great fondness by her many lifelong friends as well as students and associates at San Diego Unified School District, where she worked for many years as teacher, director and deputy superintendent, and at Compton Unified School District, where she served as superintendent.

A graceful, vivacious, and naturally ambitious person, our mother’s life was filled with professional accomplishments at a time when there were few Latina women in education administration, especially in the then-new fields of bilingual and special needs education. She was an endlessly energetic and compassionate part of education after segregation, a passion she carried with her until her final years. Still full of life after her retirement, she devoted her time to her grandchildren, family, travel, and Generations on the Move, a nonprofit philanthropic foundation that she co-founded. In her later years she suffered several strokes that impaired her mobility but left her kindness and love of socializing undiminished. She bore her injury with characteristic strength and acceptance. Although we are left with immense sadness by her loss, her life fills us with pride and gratitude for her many years with us. We will feel our mother’s love for the rest of our lives.
